Artisans of Haiti

The craftsmenship in Haiti is astounding. The metal working Artisans turn cast off oil drums into large, striking wall art. They create designs that speak to our hearts as well as our imagination. Living in dire economic circumstances the men are still able to be resoucefull and creative. Through their fine work and a fair trade exporter, these artisans are able to provide for themselves and their families.

Crafting a Sun

Folk Art begins with the hands. It is the hands that first dismantle the oil drums into seperate peices; top, bottom and middle sections. Next the artisan starts a fire to burn all residue from the recycled, 55 gallon, metal oil drum. This is followed by a vigorous brushing and then the talent must flow.

The artisan draws his design onto the metal with a long stick of chalk and prepares to craft his peice. With only a hammer and chisel the Haitian artisan shapes, cuts and molds the recycled metal. He gives it new life alive with his inspiration and creativity.
