New York City is the place to be this Winter if you wish to see the largest, most diverse selection of global gifts available in the USA. And, that is where my daughter, Lucy, and I were at the end of January. Excellent selection of multicultural gifts and a special new area set aside for 'Green' items.
-Nadine, owner of Topanien Gifts
We were overwhelmed by all the exhibits even before we hed entered the show room area. Everyone is excited and ready to find new and unique gifts. I really like meeting all the different people. And in NewYork, you hear so many different languages. Coming from relatively homogenous Oregon, this is super fun!
Lucy, my daughter and I, were working every day but we were in New York City so, we found time to visit Time Square and attended six Broadway plays. Chicago, Wicked and of course, The Phantom of the Opera - were spectacular!
While in New York, teenagers rise to the occasion. Lucy, (owner's daughter) dressed for New York, assisted at the Gift Show and insisted that we attend a show every night!
Nadine (center) has been buying African, Fair Trade Soapstone Sculpture, baskets and pillows from Percy and Leslie for over 15 years. "It is always fun to re-connect with my vendors. We only see each other at the shows. It is important to know the people who work with the artisans and bring us this gorgeous home decor."

"I always trust my vendors. If they insist that a particular wall hanging is a best seller, i take their advice." - Nadine (center), shown with vendors of wool wall hangings of India.
What an experience. Between the Gift Show shopping for new and original home decor that will delight our customers, walking the streets of New York City in the bitter cold, eating at fine restaurants and delis and attending Broadway Plays - we didn't get much sleep. That is what the airplane time is for. We are home now and the new items are already arriving at our store in Portland, Oregon. Photgraphs are being taken and we'll have new home decor and gifts on the web very soon.

New vendor for Topanien Gifts, Jay Sethi, will be supplying us with more Decorative Throw Pillows and smaller size Wall Hangings from India. Items are Fair Trade. Sethi’s background is in cancer research but upon retirement, Sethi decided to help Kashmir villagers/artisans bring their stunning works to a more global market. Sethi explained that he discovered and fell in love with these textiles during a trip to India. The artisans use Ari hooks instead of needles as the make their chain-stitch art. The textiles are made during the colder months when working in agriculture is not desireable. Sethi's new Wall Hangings and Pillows made their Big Apple debut at the New York, Jacob K. Javits Convention Center where Nadine discovered them. "I placed a large order and Jay tells me that we should have the pillows and wall hangings by Spring," says Nadine.
